LONDON — Downton Abbey's historical adviser has pointed out a "baffling" costume error in the first episode of BBC's £10 million adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace.
Alastair Bruce took to Twitter to point out a historical inaccuracy in a scene in which the Vicomte de Mortemart (Laurent Maurel) — a French aristocrat who fled to Russia during the French Revolution — is shown wearing the Legion d'honneur, an award established by Napoleon three years after the end of the revolution.
This costume error would be more forgivable, however, had de Mortemart not been so vocal in expressing his hatred for Napoleon during the offending scene. Read more...
