DES MOINES, Iowa — For months on the campaign trail, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has campaigned as the consummate Washington outsider, unpopular among his colleagues in the Republican conference and despised by the so-called Washington elites.
But as he makes his closing argument to Iowa voters, on the eve of the state's leadoff caucuses, Cruz's pitch added another layer: This is now a choice between Cruz and billionaire businessman Donald Trump, and Republicans can't afford to pick poorly.
