A woman who caused a panic on a subway train last week was arrested on Tuesday and now faces a reckless endangerment charge.

Zaida Pugh, 21, a self-described actress, said she was hoping to create a viral video and start a conversation around how people treat the homeless when she walked onto a D train last week with a bucket of bugs.

Pugh, pretending to be homeless, said she was selling crickets and worms for a quarter each.

In a video of the incident, a riled up and nervous group of people crowds around Pugh as she walks amid passengers on the train. She and some of the passengers shout at each other before one of them smacks the bucket out of Pugh's hands, sending hundreds of critters flyingRead more...

If the rapid ascent of the wearables as a hot new category is, after the tepid reception to the Apple Watch, poised to falter, Xiaomi's uninspiring new Amazfit may be the final death knell for the smartwatch.

Unveiled by Xiaomi-backed company Huami during an event in China this week, the device features GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and packs a heart rate monitor for fitness tracking.

Very little information is available regarding the device on either company's official website but, according to GSM Arena, the device will offer up to 35 hours of battery life, is waterproof and works with the MiFitt app for the iOS and Android. According to the report, if you switch the device to pedometer mode you can get about 11 days of battery life from it.  Read more...

In 1980, a 25-year-old university graduate named Steve Jobs turned up in the Irish city of Cork with a plan.

He was going to revolutionize the world with mini personal computers that could store things like recipes or doctor's notes. In a few years, he told a newspaper reporter at the time, they would drop significantly in cost and change the way we live.

It took a little longer for us all to be holding personal devices, but he wasn't wrong. The article was published on Dec. 23, 1980 and with a small amount of skepticism it spoke of the man who brought a $7 million investment and 700 jobs to Cork.  Read more...

A new video from NASA shows all three powerful hurricanes currently churning waters on Earth as seen by the International Space Station in one day.

Two hurricanes in the Pacific — Madeline and Lester — have the potential to threaten Hawaii, and Hurricane Gaston is still in the open Atlantic Ocean.

All three of them are on stark display in the new time-lapse video taken on Aug. 30 from the Space Station.

The station's cameras were able to capture all of these storms in one day thanks to the incredible speed at which the outpost is moving.

In order to stay in orbit, the laboratory needs to speed above Earth at more than 17,000 miles per hour, making a full circuit of the planet every 90 minutes, and giving astronauts an amazing view of all of Earth's landscapes. Read more...

Here's what Apple's $14.5 billion in Irish taxes looks like in Apple products

After an in-depth analysis of Apple, the European Commission found that Ireland gave the company illegal tax benefits worth $14.5 billion (€13 billion).

On Tuesday, after a three-year investigation into Apple's Irish tax affairs, Apple was ordered to pay the €13 billion to the Irish government. The ruling states that the dealings are "illegal under EU state aid rules, because it allowed Apple to pay substantially less tax than other businesses. Ireland must now recover the illegal aid."

Now, $14.5 billion sounds like a lot of money, but to really put things into perspective, we figured we would break that figure down in terms of popular Apple products. Needless to say, the numbers were awe-inspiring. Read more...

From books to television to movies, clowns have managed to become symbols of terror, a feeling the residents of one South Carolina community know all too well.

It all began with a pair of reports to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 20 of "a suspicious person dressed in circus clown clothing and white face paint" trying to lure kids into the woods close to Fleetwood Manor Apartments.

Witnesses were initially uncooperative, but when an officer made a follow-up visit, additional witnesses came forward, according to WYFF. One woman said her son reported seeing clowns "whispering" and trying to lure him into the woods and, later, saw clowns in the same area flashing green lights.  Read more...

Happy hours this summer aren't about the authentic martini or the perfect pint. They're about the alcoholic slush.

These sludgy, crystallized drinks (trademarked brands include Icees and 7-Eleven's Slurpees) are a mixture of sugar and water with flavor additions including coffee or carbonated beverages.

Kate Laufler Gorenstein, of premium liquor brand public relations company KLG Public Relations, tells Mashable, "Frosé has certainly played a role in the popularity of the adult slush ... People want to drink something that is refreshing and lower in proof during the summer months. That said, the adult slushee has been around long before the frosé craze and it will be around after. There is the obvious tie into nostalgia." Read more...

When Kimberly Jones got a text from her 11-year-old daughter, Bella, she was upset.

Not because her daughter was texting while at school, but because the Lansing, Kansas middle schooler was forced to swap her leggings for school sweatpants after being told her tunic was too short and a dress code violation.

Jones detailed the incident and the embarrassment her daughter felt in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.

"She texted me all upset sobbing that they told her not to call me and that she had to wear borrowed sweatpants all day," Jones posted on Facebook. "Their policy is that they are not allowed to change."  Read more...

The use of mobile devices by parents to keep their kids occupied is fairly well established, but a new study indicates that those devices' calming effect may even be useful for surgeries.

A new study being published by the World Federation Of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) claims that giving a child an iPad to use before surgery can be as relaxing as a sedative.

"Our study showed that child and parental anxiety before anaesthesia are equally blunted by midazolam or use of the iPad," Dr. Dominique Chassard said in a statement released in the run-up to the release of the group's research findings.  Read more...

By now you may have heard rumors about the recent detection of what's been described as a "strong signal," possibly sent out by an advanced form of alien life in a star system 94 light-years away.

Pretty exciting, right?

Well, before you go pack your bags and wait for the aliens to come along and pick you up, there are a few things you should know.

The strong radio signal, detected by astronomers using a telescope in Russia, was actually heard in May 2015.

It's certainly a cool finding, but it's also nothing close to a confirmation of intelligent life out in the universe.  Read more...

Can a peanut butter and jelly sandwich be beautiful? Even underneath all the cheap, floppy white bread and easy-squeeze jelly?

That's the question posed by Foodbeast's new series, Jeff's Table, the satirical response to the Netflix documentary series Chef's Table. Instead of world-famous chefs preparing ornate foods, we meet Jeff, who makes a cheap sandwich with "whatever's on sale."

Like Chef's Table, though, Jeff and his sandwich creation is mostly elegant. Until the belch, at least.
