One of William Shakespeare's chief contemporaries will now be credited as one of his co-writers, thanks to an expert analysis — one that has revealed the legendary playwright to be quite the collaborator.

Some 17 Shakespeare plays are believed to contain at least a little writing from other people, according to a recent analysis by 23 academics with Oxford University Press.

One of those co-authors is Christopher Marlowe, another playwright of the Elizabethan era occasionally rumored to be Shakespeare himself — a possibility dismissed by most experts, who believe Shakespeare was Shakespeare.  Read more...

LOS ANGELES — The Walking Dead just set a Twitter record.

The AMC show's Sunday night Season 7 debut was the most-tweeted TV episode of 2016, not including sports/special events, according to Twitter.

Globally, there were 4.6 million tweets. The top moment on the social media platform came around 9:30 p.m. EST after the (sob!) second death of a character in that same episode.

The show has long been considered one of the most buzz-worthy television series.

During the 2015-2016 season, the zombie drama was the No. 1 most-tweeted series in the U.S. with an average of 435,000 tweets sent per episode. Read more...

"What the hell is he thinking?" That's a common refrain for anyone who follows politics in 2016. But it's also something millions of Americans spend years wondering about Richard Nixon.

In Being Nixon, Evan Thomas shows us an enigma shrouded in paranoia. Tricky Dick was a walking study in contradictions. Combatative in public, he had a massive inferiority complex in private — and was surprisingly easily manipulated by the people that surrounded him in the White House.  Read more...

LOS ANGELES — DJ Khaled documented his child's birth on Snapchat over the weekend, because of course he did.

Music from the DJ/Snapchat star's 2016 album Major Key accompanied the Snaps, which feature his fiancee Nicole Tuck in labour.

The news comes as no surprise given Khaled's popularity on the video sharing platform. He's become known for phrases he uses in his Snaps, including "major key" and "bless up."

Also, Khaled revealed to Jimmy Kimmel earlier this year that he planned on Snapping the baby's birth.

On Monday, the influencer uploaded a picture of new swag for his son. Read more...

Drake's got a lot of enemies, which is probably why he has such a knack for bringing famous people with long-running feuds together under one roof.

Drizzy turns 30 today, and to celebrate, he hosted a party last night that may or may not have had a "Bad Blood" theme. Katy Perry, John Mayer and Taylor Swift, a trio with a twisted history, were all on the guest list, presumably because all Drake wanted for his special day was drama.

Fortunately, one brave man scored selfies with all parties involved.

LOS ANGELES — Pete Burns, the vivacious and androgynous frontman for British pop and New Wave band Dead or Alive, died Sunday from cardiac arrest, his management confirmed Monday. He was 57.

Dead or Alive's biggest hit was also its first — "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" — which charted around the world and peaked at No. 11 in the U.S. in 1985. The band, known as much for its proto-Goth style as its music, had a handful of lesser hits including "Brand New Lover" and "Something in My House."

Burns, who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006, went through extensive rounds of plastic surgery around that time and significantly altered his appearance, which he talked openly about in interviews and a television special. At one point he won a significant settlement from his surgeon for a lip procedure gone wrong. Read more...

LOS ANGELES — Netflix is about to pour even more money into its original content.

The streaming giant on Monday said it has plans to take out $800 million in debt to finance originals. The overall goal for the platform is to have 50% original content, or a total of 1,000 hours of new programming, in 2017.

With the added debt offering, Netflix's long-term debt is over $3 billion.

Netflix said in a statement the funds will go toward "general corporate purposes" including content acquisitions.

A new Tetris champion was crowned on Sunday as eight of the world's most talented players came to compete in the 7th annual Classic Tetris World Championship.

The winner was six-time champ Jonas Neubauer, who successfully defended his title in the final match against Jeff Moore. This was Moore's first time finishing in the CTWC top-three, with Harry Hong — the only former competitor to defeat Neubauer, in 2014 — finishing in third.

The eight finalists emerged from a group of 57 participants, all of whom faced off through two days of qualifiers before the 32-bracket seeded tournament determined a winner. Neubauer received a $1,000 award for his victory, while Moore claimed a $500 runner-up pot. Read more...

The dark side of a feel-good World Series

The Chicago Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and the Cleveland Indians haven't won a World Series since 1948, meaning this year's Major League Baseball championship saga lends itself particularly well to feel-good narratives and misty-eyed tropes about drought-suffering fans finally getting a taste of the good stuff.

If only it were so simple.

Each side in this year's series also illuminates the darker side of modern sports fandom, in which following one's favorite teams increasingly requires moral reckoning and rationalization.

A team of British researchers has found a way to alter cow sperm and reduce male fertility by stopping the sperm from swimming.

The discovery, if replicated in human sperm, could be used to develop new forms of male contraception, the scientists announced last week. The same method could also be used to boost sperm flow for enhanced fertility treatments.

"We hope to develop something that will be clinically useful and can be taken forward in the future," Sarah Jones, a pharmacology lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton in England, said in a press release.

Telling small lies leads down a slippery slope to big lies, study finds

Telling little fibs leads down a slippery slope to bigger lies — and our brains adapt to escalating dishonesty, which makes deceit easier, a new study shows.

Neuroscientists at the University College London's Affective Brain Lab put 80 people in scenarios where they could repeatedly lie and get paid more based on the magnitude of their lies. They said they were the first to demonstrate empirically that people's lies grow bolder the more they fib.

The researchers then used brain scans to show that our mind's emotional hot spot — the amygdala — becomes desensitized or used to the growing dishonesty, according to a study published online Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience. Read more...
